What Is High Loop? Our Expert Tells All

High loop is a term that means “exceedingly expensive” and is used to describe a certain kind of restaurant: a place where the food comes in huge portions, where you can get the same meal for $100 or more. It’s a different kind of super-expensive restaurants, like Spago or Jean Georges or Per Se. The term is so far removed from ordinary language that it’s hard to tell what anybody means when they use it.

In fact, high loop generally refers to any kind of very expensive restaurant.

I am not sure exactly when high loop became the equivalent of “exceedingly expensive.” But I know what it was like before then. In the early 1980s I worked at a company that sold vending machines to restaurants and supermarkets. We used the term “high-end” to mean anything we sold those establishments that cost more than $500. That was a lot less than Spago, but still pretty high for the time–and by the mid-1980s even that ceiling had been reached, and we were selling some machines for $10,000 and others for $20,000 or even $50,000 apiece.

First of all, let’s dispel a few myths. Dishwasher high loop is not a new problem; it’s been around for decades. But it was only recently that dishwashers were programmed to have the option of going high-loop instead of normal cycle. (That was part of the new top-loading dishwasher model introduced in the 1990s.)

What is high loop? It’s when your dishwasher has been set to “high-efficiency” (HE). The HE setting uses less water than normal cycle; sometimes less than half as much. Since the dishwasher is designed to run at higher temperatures than normal, it can use even less water and still wash the dishes properly.

But there is one problem with that: some dishes have a very small surface area. A regular load of dishes has surface area equal to about 11 square feet, whereas a dishwasher load has more like 16 square feet—more than twice as much. So if you set your dishwasher to HE, you might wind up with really dirty dishes because some of them never made it through the wash cycle.

A high loop is a condition that can develop when a dishwasher’s drain hose becomes disconnected from the machine.

The machine continues to wash dishes, but without a water supply. This situation can lead to serious problems–such as food being left on the dishes, which can then attract insects and cause health problems.

If you have a problem with your dishwasher, it will be better if you call an appliance repair company rather than trying to fix it yourself. You might be able to save time and money by calling one of these companies that specialize in high-loop repairs.

The term “high loop” means what you think it means. It’s a phrase that comes up in discussions of high-frequency trading, and it’s also used by some people who have their own definitions of the term.

High-frequency traders are traders who use high-speed computers to trade large blocks of stocks with minimal human intervention, often in fractions of a second. They’re the ones who make the orders that trigger automatic trades, the ones who avoid human downtime and the commissions that come from handling all those orders manually, the ones who pull off “flash crashes” where stock prices plummet without warning.

But, as you might expect, there’s no single definition of “high loop.” What does “high loop” mean to one person is not necessarily what it means to another person.

From this blog: High Loop Definition

High loop is a term to describe the kind of loop that doesn’t work in a dishwasher.

The high-loop dishwasher works by using electrical currents to carry water through the tub, which gets cleaner than water carried along naturally by gravity.

In a low-loop dishwasher, the hot and cold water from the faucet flows directly into the tub to mix with the dirty water already there. The result is a mixed washing solution, with lots of bubbles and no serious cleaning.

In a high-loop dishwasher, the hot and cold flow directly into separate compartments, each made of a different material: one compartment is heated; one is not. The pipes are connected by valves, so that when you open a valve, it can pass both hot and cold water through at once. When you close it, only one side flows at a time.

The high-loop design reduces wear on the pipes, but makes the machine more expensive to run because it uses more energy and produces more heat.

High loop is the use of a high-capacity dishwasher to get more dishes clean. “High-capacity” is defined as one that can wash and dry about 22 place settings, which at today’s dinner service rate is between 7 and 8 per person.

The idea of using a high-capacity dishwasher can be traced back to a 1980s ad campaign for General Electric’s top of the line dishwashers. In the ads, two people are shown getting dressed: one puts on a suit, another puts on an apron, but both are standing in the same spot talking to each other. The apron-wearing person says: “He’s got the right clothes on, but not the right appliances.” And point to a pair of dishwashers in the background.

“They’re just like us,” says one of the people wearing suits, “but they make it easier.”

The dishwasher has a high loop. The dishwasher is the most common appliance in America, and you might think that its design would be just as simple as it is. But no. It’s the high loop that makes it so complicated to figure out how it works.

The high loop is the mechanism that gets water into the dishwasher, and then turns it around and gets it out again. In a sense, this mechanism is merely a loop: a closed curve that contains itself. The water goes in, goes down, comes back up again, and exits to the side at the top of the loop. For some reason, we call this kind of thing a “loop.”
