What is a dishwasher?

Basically, a dishwasher is a machine for cleaning dishes and eating utensils. It does this by spraying hot water and detergent on the dirty surfaces. Soiled water drains out, and in most machines, clean water then rinses the cleaned items. The machine also dries the washed items by blowing hot air over them.

Dishwashers are usually considered luxury items because they cost more than manual labor (washing dishes by hand), but in many parts of the world they have become common enough to be considered necessities. In addition to saving time and effort, using a dishwasher may save money in other ways, too: water use is reduced because all the dirty water is contained; energy costs are reduced because the energy needed to heat the water is less than the energy used to heat cold water on a stovetop; and many municipalities offer rebates on utility bills to encourage people to buy energy-efficient appliances.

The interior of a dishwasher holds racks for holding dishes. At the bottom of many models is a pan with holes called an air-gap; this prevents wastewater from backing up into the dishwasher. On older models, this was provided by a loop in the drain hose above the kitchen sink.

Let’s face it, a dishwasher is not a very glamorous object. It is not something you spend much time thinking about. Yet a dishwasher is one of the most important appliances in your kitchen. On the contrary, some models have special programs for washing heavily soiled dishes like pots or pans, whereas others have prewash or soaking modes for if you want to clean just a few lightly-soiled items such as teaspoons or coffee cups.

Unlike manual dishwashing, which relies largely on physical scrubbing to remove soiling, the mechanical dishwasher cleans by spraying hot water, typically between 45 and 75 °C (110 and 170 °F), at the dishes, with lower temperatures used for delicate items.

A mix of water and dishwasher detergent is pumped to one or more rotating spray arms, spraying the dishes with the cleaning mixture. Once the wash is finished, the water is drained, more hot water enters the tub by means of an electro-mechanical solenoid valve, and the rinse cycle begins. After rinsing, the water is drained again and a small amount of rinse-aid is added to reduce water spotting on glassware. Finally, the dishes are dried using one of several drying methods.

In addition to domestic units, industrial dishwashers are available for use in commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants, where many dishes must be cleaned.

History of Dishwashers

The first dishwasher was invented by Josephine Cochrane in 1886 and was featured at the 1893 World Fair in Chicago. After winning multiple awards for her invention, Cochrane sold her first machines to hotels and restaurants who often had hundreds of dishes to clean after each meal.

Dishwashers were not well received when they first hit the market, largely because people were used to doing their own dishes by hand. It took about 50 years for dishwashers to appear in most households across America; today it is rare to find a home without one.
