The Narrow Dishwasher That’s Also Tall

I’m interested in appliances. I was looking for a dishwasher that could fit into a narrow space.

I saw one at Sears but, as usual, the Sears website has no information about it. The most annoying thing about the Sears website is how hard it is to find anything there. You would think that searching for “24” would show you all of the 24-inch dishwashers they sell, but no: you get a bunch of random dishwashers and stoves, and only one or two of them are actually 24 inches wide.

Why do they make it so hard to find out what they’re selling? Do they think that if they put up pictures and descriptions of their products, people will not buy them? Does making people go into the store to compare models work better than having web pages where you can compare them?

The other thing I wanted was a tall dishwasher. Dishwashers have gotten taller over the years, but not much taller. When I bought my current dishwasher, I actually had to replace my kitchen cabinets with higher ones to accommodate it.

The dishwasher is a Bosch SHE3AR72UC. The control panel buttons are flush with the front, which looks sleek but makes them hard to read. They are also hard to press because they are flush with the front of the dishwasher.

The top rack is not adjustable, but it is very tall. There’s a lot of space up there. Even though we got the tall tub model, right out of the box it appears that there’s not enough room for large pots and pans on the bottom rack. We will have to try loading it with pots and pans and see how it goes, but it doesn’t look promising.

The top rack has two rows of folding tines, which seems dumb. Why make people figure out where to put the silverware? There are also no ridges on the bottom of the silverware tray, so I had trouble figuring out how to load it. Also, why is it plastic? Isn’t this a dishwasher?

We have just run our first load and are impressed by how quiet it is. It’s also really fast: only 45 minutes for the normal cycle, vs an hour for our old dishwasher!

This dishwasher is 24″ wide, instead of the standard-sized dishwasher’s 30″, so it takes up much less space.

I have no idea how common this size is, but I found it at Home Depot. I’ve looked at dishwashers before and felt that they were too big; this one caught my eye because it was obviously smaller. However, being compact, it has a capacity of only 8 place settings–enough for a small family or single person.

It comes in black and white, but when I tried to buy the black one Home Depot had in stock, they said it was damaged and I’d have to special order a new one for $500–too much for me. But about two weeks later (while looking for something else) I found a white one on the shelf for $350 and bought it. So you might want to be persistent if you’re looking for the black one.

And the white model isn’t bad either. It looks fine with my white fridge and stove.

It’s also very tall: 66 1/4″ high with adjustable legs (my ceilings are 8′ tall). I’m not sure why they made it so tall–it’s taller than my fridge, which seems unnecessary–but it does

I have never owned a dishwasher before. My first apartment, in the Bay Area, had a dishwasher, but it didn’t work. In my second apartment there was no room for a dishwasher even if I’d wanted one. If there was one in my third apartment, I didn’t know about it. So I washed dishes by hand.

I’ve been fine with that. It’s not like I’ve ever been so busy that I bemoaned the time spent washing dishes by hand. But my wife has been less sanguine about continuing this practice in our new house. And so last month we got a Bosch 800 Series SHX68T55UC dishwasher.

We picked the Bosch because it’s one of the few models that, at 34 inches wide and 22 1/4 inches deep, can fit into a kitchen designed for an 18-inch-wide dishwasher (the “standard” size for many decades). The 18-inch-wide model is also 24 inches deep, so no other dishwasher would fit into our kitchen without moving the cabinets around.

Bosch has two lines: the 300 and 500 series are 24 inches deep and substantially cheaper; the 800 series is 22 1/4 inches deep and more expensive

We had been planning to get a dishwasher for years. We just never got around to it. We didn’t think we needed one, since our apartment is small and we don’t have many dishes, and we thought they were too expensive. But eventually we decided that even though we don’t have many dishes, it’s still annoying to wash them by hand.

We live in a narrow building with narrow hallways, so narrow dishwashers are common here. I had most of my own standards (quiet, stainless steel interior) and my husband had his (tall tub). Our budget was under $500; under $400 would be ideal.

After looking at various options, we settled on the Frigidaire Gallery FGID2466QF(http://www.frigidaire.com/Kitchen-Appliances/Dishwashers/Professional-Series/FGID2466QF/). We bought it from AJ Madison (https://www.ajmadison.com/) because they had a great price and free delivery & installation (though they did take their sweet time delivering it).

For some reason, my parents’ dishwasher has only one rack. I’ve lived with this for decades and never considered it odd, but recently I was talking about dishwashers to someone who was buying a condo, and she said she didn’t know how to choose between models with one or two racks.

It seemed obvious that the two-rack model was better. The more you can fit in the dishwasher, the less time you spend doing dishes by hand. And there’s a second advantage: if you have just a few dishes, you don’t want to use up electricity running the whole machine for just those few items. With a single rack, either you do all the dishes by hand or else run the full dishwasher. If you have two racks you can use one of them for small loads.

As far as I can tell from looking at web sites, every dishwasher made today has two racks. So why did my parents have only one? Or rather: why did they have only one rack? Because there were two racks, stacked on top of each other like bunk beds.

The lower rack was normal height; but the upper rack was tall enough to accommodate wine glasses. We could load twice as many dishes as with a normal single-rack
