I had a little trouble figuring out how to title this article, because I thought it might be offensive to suggest that women have a special role in doing dishes. But, despite my efforts to be more egalitarian, the fact is that my girlfriend does most of them.
So this is what I got her for Christmas: a fully integrated dishwasher.
Nerd alert: The machine is nearly silent (44 dB), so it can run at night without waking us up; and it has a built-in water softener, which means we won’t get any spots on our glasses or need to use rinse aid (which I’ve always considered bad for the environment). It also has a whole bunch of programs: normal, quick, express, intensive, heavy, china/crystal, pre-rinse (for stuff with dried egg or rice), and eco.
We had been using a Miele dishwasher for years. It was great and we were sad when it died (and not just because we had to do the dishes by hand). One day while doing her nails (she’s an artist — very fancy), she asked me if I could research some potential replacement options. Apparently I’m the one who does all the research around here!
