Here are some common signs that it’s time for a new dishwasher:

The average life of a washer is around eight years, so if you’re on the cusp and your dishwasher is still working well, consider yourself lucky. If your appliance is older than that and starting to show signs of wear, it may be time to consider replacing it.

If you’re not sure how old your dishwasher is, the most reliable way to check its age is by finding the serial number and decoding it. The first two numbers of the serial number indicate the year it was made. So if your serial number starts with a “99,” that means it was manufactured in 1999. If you can’t locate the serial number or cannot decipher it, here are some things that can help you decide if you need to replace your dishwasher.

First, maybe you’re overloading the dishwasher and there isn’t enough space for water to circulate around all of your dishes. Second, maybe your water isn’t hot enough (120 degrees Fahrenheit). Third, your spray arms may be clogged with food debris; clean these out regularly by removing them from the dishwasher and rinsing them off under the sink with warm water and vinegar.
