Cleanliness is not just for people. Here’s how to keep your dishwasher fresh.
Keep the dishwasher door open after use. The moisture will evaporate, preventing lime scale buildup and mold.
Run a load with vinegar once a month to clean the dishwasher. Vinegar will also remove detergent residue from previous washes.
Wipe up any spills as soon as possible with a paper towel to prevent stains on the bottom of the dishwasher. If spills occur often, line the bottom of the dishwasher with aluminum foil or place a cookie sheet along the bottom rack to catch drips of food.
To keep your dishwasher sparkling and fresh, run a cup of white vinegar through a normal cycle once a month. This will eliminate any built up soap residue and help keep the dishwasher smelling fresh. Vinegar is also great to use to clean the inside of your dishwasher. The acidity in vinegar is excellent for cleaning out hard water stains. It can also remove mineral deposits that make your dishwasher less effective.
For a deeper cleaning, you can use baking soda to scrub away food particles and grease that may have built up in your dishwasher over time. For this deep clean, sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher and run it on an empty cycle with hot water only (no soap).
We usually think of our dishwasher as a great tool for keeping things clean. But have you ever thought about the machine itself? Dishwashers need regular cleaning, too. Here are some tips on how to keep them running smoothly and smelling fresh.
1. Keep it dry: One of the worst things that can happen to your dishwasher is mold and mildew buildup. Leave the door open for at least two hours after each use to let moisture escape. Also, make sure you run your dishwasher with hot water, which kills bacteria that causes bad odors in the first place.
2. Choose your detergent carefully: Many people think using more soap will get their dishes cleaner, but too much detergent can actually do more harm than good. Detergents today are highly concentrated and don’t require much to get the job done right. If you’re not sure where to start, check out this list of top-rated products or consult with an appliance professional who can help you choose the right one for your home and lifestyle.
3. Clean the filter: A dirty filter can prevent your dishes from getting clean and cause bad smells in your kitchen. Check once a month to see if it needs cleaning; if so, remove it and wash it with warm
The most important thing is to keep your dishwasher clean. You can do this by using a little dishwashing liquid and running it through the cycle once a month. If you don’t do this, the dishwasher could start to smell bad and mold could develop on the rubber seal around the door.
When you want to clean inside your dishwasher, use about half of the recommended amount of dishwashing detergent and put it on the hottest wash cycle. This will help eliminate mold and other residue in your dishwasher.
Be sure to check the spray arms for any food build-up and remove it with a toothpick or other small object. Also, check the drain basket for any food particles that may have accumulated there. Make sure to clean these out too so that water can drain properly from the machine. Also, be sure to take out any hard water deposits from around faucets or fixtures that might cause damage over time if left unchecked for long periods of time.
1) Remove the upper rack and soak it in a solution of warm water and vinegar. Scrub the inside of the dishwasher with a sponge.
2) Run an empty cycle on the hottest setting, using a short-cycle dishwasher cleaner such as Affresh or Cascade Complete ActionPacs (see below).
3) Wipe down the door, gasket, and outside of the machine with a damp cloth dipped in a mild solution of soapy water.
4) Put dirty dishes in your dishwasher daily to avoid bacterial buildup. If you’re not running full loads, you should use sanitizing rinse agents.
Using the dishwasher is a great way to keep your dishes clean, but how do you keep the dishwasher itself clean?
1. Clean it once a month, or more often if needed. To clean an empty dishwasher, use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda.
2. Start by running an empty cycle on the hottest setting available.
3. Add about a cup of baking soda to the bottom of the dishwasher and let it sit for about 20 minutes.
4. Scrub and wipe down the inside of your dishwasher with a clean cloth or sponge dipped in warm water and white vinegar (or better yet, lemon juice). The acid in vinegar helps remove stubborn stains and sanitizes your appliance.
5. Run another cycle with just hot water to rinse out the residue and odors left behind by the vinegar.
6. Dry it out after every load by cracking open the door when not in use so moisture can escape and not leave spots on dishes or create mildewy smells.
Dishwashers are supposed to clean your dishes. But over time, they start to become gunky, leaving residue on your dishes and even stinky odors.
Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to clean your dishwasher. Here’s how.
1. Replace your dirty dishwasher filter
Most newer dishwashers have filters that are easy to remove and replace. This is an important thing to do because without regular cleaning, food debris can build up in the filter and clog it, preventing water from draining properly. If you don’t know where the filter is located in your dishwasher, check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s website for a diagram of the appliance. Typically it’s located in the bottom of the tub or along the side of it. You may have to unscrew a few screws to remove it; then just rinse out any gunk that has accumulated before returning it to its original spot. Make sure your machine is completely dry before running another cycle with dishes inside!
2. Clean the door gasket
The rubber door gasket helps seal in hot water and steam during each cycle, so if it gets moldy or grimy, this can cause odors and even damage your machine over time
