How to Clean Your Dishwasher

I was recently reminded of the importance of keeping our appliances clean. A friend asked about how to clean a dishwasher—a fairly common question, but one I rarely think about. We all know how to run a cycle and throw in some soap, but how often do you think about cleaning the dishwasher itself?

A quick online search told me it should be done monthly, but I had never done it. It turns out that cleaning your dishwasher is pretty easy, and only requires a few simple steps.

Step 1: Run your dishwasher on an empty cycle using hot water. The hot water will help loosen up any built-up grime inside the machine.

Step 2: When the cycle is finished, wipe down the rubber seal around the door. This prevents mildew and funky smells from forming there.

Step 3: Sprinkle baking soda along the bottom of your dishwasher for extra cleaning power.

Step 4: Run another hot water cycle to dislodge any food stuck in the filter or spray arms and wash away the baking soda.

Another important step is to replace your rinse aid regularly so that there’s enough in your machine to get dishes sparkling clean!

While the machine cleans your dirty dishes, food particles accumulate inside the dishwasher and make it dirty. Fortunately, as with most appliances, you can maintain your dishwasher with a few simple steps.

Cleaning the filter

Remove the filter by pulling it out from the bottom. Thoroughly clean it with warm water.

Run an empty load

Run an empty load with a dishwasher-cleaning product such as Affresh or a cup of white vinegar to eliminate odors and residue buildup.

Use a damp rag to wipe down your dishwasher interior before running any loads of dishes. This prevents dried-on food from staining or sticking.

If you’ve been doing the dishes for a while, you know that dishwashers are pretty good at cleaning dishes. But, no one wants to clean their dishwasher. It’s boring, and gross, and it’s not like they’re going to dirty up especially quickly.

However, if you don’t clean your dishwasher, your dishes might not get as clean as they could. And that’s a problem because if you’re doing the dishes, you want them to be as clean as possible when they come out of the dishwasher.

The best way to clean your dishwasher is to run it on high heat with a cup of white vinegar in the top rack. This will loosen any grime or scum buildup inside the washer and on the dishes themselves.

If you want to do a deep clean every month or so, try running a cycle with nothing but vinegar in it – no soap at all – and then running another cycle with detergent after that. This should do wonders for clearing out any gunk or mildew buildup in your machine (and possibly even on your dishes).

Doing this regularly will keep the machine from getting too grimy and smelly over time; plus it’ll help prevent problems like clogged drains or bad od

Dishwashers are supposed to clean your dishes and silverware, but what happens when they need a little cleaning themselves? Dishes don’t get as clean as they should. The door gaskets may develop an odor. Greasy films may appear on the interior walls. Detergent may leave a milky residue on glasses and dishes.

The first step in cleaning your dishwasher is to run it empty through a cycle using a detergent tablet or cup. The action of the detergent and water will help loosen up dirt, soap scum, and food particles so that you can remove them more easily.

If the inside of your dishwasher has a greasy film on it, wipe it down with a sponge dampened with white vinegar. Use straight vinegar if the film is heavy; otherwise dilute the vinegar 1:1 with water. If this does not remove the film, try wiping it down with either denatured alcohol or full-strength rubbing alcohol applied with a sponge or soft cloth.

If your machine has been so neglected that it develops an odor, you will probably have to use bleach to kill whatever organic material has collected inside it. Pour 2 cups of bleach into the bottom of the washer and run it through one complete cycle at

When you think about it, your dishwasher is a pretty amazing appliance. It can clean your dirty dishes, pots and pans, and even baby bottles in minutes. But when was the last time you cleaned the dishwasher itself? We’re not talking about cleaning the dishes, we mean actually cleaning the appliance that cleans everything else—because it needs a good scrubbing too!

We’re here to give you all the information you need about how to clean your dishwasher so it can keep working for years to come. After all, this is a big investment in your kitchen. Keep reading to learn how to keep your dishwasher running smoothly.

First of all, I’d like to say that this is a dishwasher, not a washing machine. But it’s still dirty.

Okay. Let’s start with the basics: you need to clean the inside of the dishwasher with vinegar and water. The vinegar will help remove any soap scum buildup on the inside, and will also help remove any food and grease. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and will help kill bacteria and mold. You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar, either one works fine. To clean your dishwasher, mix equal parts vinegar and water (1 cup each) in a spray bottle.

Spray this solution onto the inside of the dishwasher door and let it sit for 5 minutes or so. Then, using a dry cloth, wipe down the entire interior of the dishwasher door. This will help remove any soap scum buildup that may be present on the inside of your dishwasher door. You may want to repeat this process until all of the soap scum buildup is removed from your dishwasher door.

A dishwasher can noticeably improve the quality of your life. A really good dishwasher that cleans your dishes well and is easy to load will make you happier every day. A mediocre or hard-to-use dishwasher will make you unhappy every day.

So if you are in the market for a new dishwasher, don’t buy a cheap one. The few hundred dollars extra you spend on a good one will be paid back in improved happiness over the years.

And what’s the best? In our experience the best dishwasher brand by far is Miele. Buy a Miele and you’ll never have to worry about it, or wonder if some other brand would have been better.
