To start with, there are different types of dishwashers. Some are made for commercial use and others are made for residential use. If you’re looking at an industrial model then it’s probably going to cost more than one intended for home use because they’re built differently. And if it doesn’t come with its own power source then make sure that you get one; otherwise you won’t be able to use it at all!

1. Decide you want to be a dishwasher. You have to really want it.

2. Get up earlier than you’ve ever gotten up before and walk eight miles through the snow (uphill both ways) to the restaurant.

3. When you get there, ask for the chef and say “I’m your new dishwasher.”

4. The chef will say, “Really? My new dishwasher?” and then he’ll laugh at you. Be prepared for this and don’t take it personally.

5. After he stops laughing, the chef will say, “When can you start?”

6. Don’t say “I’m your new dishwasher” again because he already told you that was funny the first time.

Start out as a dishwasher if you’re looking to gain experience in a restaurant kitchen. Dishwashers are often the first people hired, because they’re so easy to replace. You’ll learn the basics of working in a kitchen, and you’ll have a chance to watch cooks at work and pick up some tips.

Chances are good that you’ll be asked to do so at some point during your employment as a dishwasher, but by volunteering ahead of time, you’ll show initiative to your employer.

Your supervisor will appreciate any assistance you can provide and will see that you’re willing to step outside of your normal job description when necessary.

The most important thing is to keep up with the dishes. Wash them as soon as possible, because once they get backed up it gets really stressful. Make sure that you put everything away in the correct spot, so it’s easy for chefs to find what they need. There are usually a lot of people coming into the kitchen asking for things, so being organized will help you be efficient.

You’ll also be responsible for keeping the area clean and sanitized, which means sweeping and mopping often. At some restaurants the dishwasher is responsible for washing the floors every night. If there are still people eating when you start cleaning up at the end of your shift then try to be quiet so that they enjoy their dinner!
