How Much Does it Cost to Install an 18 in Dishwasher

The average cost to install an 18 in dishwasher is $1,863.50 according to the Home Depot’s 2013 Annual Home Improvement Report.

If you have a small kitchen, you might want to consider installing a 16 or even a 14 inch dishwasher instead of an 18 inch dishwasher because smaller dishwashers are less expensive than bigger ones.

The average cost to install a 16 in dishwasher is $1,139.28 and the average cost for a 14 inch dishwasher is $908.22 with labor costs adding 17 percent more than the cost of a full-size model (see chart).

For about $250, you can buy an 18 in dishwasher from Home Depot. If you’re installing one yourself, that’s a good place to start. But not all 18 in dishwashers are created equal.

A lot of people have learned the hard way that the cheaper dishwashers you get at the big box store are bound to be unreliable. You need to spend another $150 on a good brand name dishwasher. For a dishwasher with stainless steel interior, expect to pay around $400.

That means your total cost for an 18 in dishwasher is around $550. Now take into account all the extra kitchen gadgets you want and also remember that it will last years longer than a cheap one and you’ll end up spending $600 or more plus tax and installation which is around $100 more or less depending on how skilled you are at installing them yourself or if there are professional installers to do it for you.

Or if you don’t want a commercial dishwasher, but instead use those big stackable racks and containers, it would still cost around $70 for 6 months of cleaning (unless you’re lucky enough to find a deal already on special) + more for the large tray (but wouldn’t have to worry about

The dishwasher was installed in a small, two-bedroom apartment with a kitchen. The owner told us it was difficult to find an installer who would do an 18-inch dishwasher, and the price quoted by the few that would vary widely.

As we went through the reviews, we found a company called Appliance Direct in Annapolis, Maryland (http://www.appliancedirect.com/), which had done more than 1,000 installations and stated clearly on each job what the unit cost them to install. The dishwasher they installed cost $1,846, including installation services and all necessary parts.

We asked the owner if she thought the price was reasonable. She said yes: “I think it’s worth it.”

To get a better idea of what to expect, we looked up installation costs and prices posted online. The price ranged from $2,298 to more than $3,000.

If you’re looking to buy your first dishwasher, that’s one of the reasons why we’ve broken out the prices on this page: We want Dishwasher Calculator to be a helpful tool for everyone.

You might think you can skip the hard part and just go to the store, but let’s face it: that’s a lot of work for a simple thing like a dishwasher.

It turns out that when you’re considering something as important as your new dishwasher, you want to do your homework. Each manufacturer has its own installation manual. Each manufacturer has its own parts list and bill of materials. Each has its own process for calculating the cost of the thing you ordered. And each has lists of products you need, not just for this machine but also for ancillary items (such as pull-out shelving and control modules) that are not included in the price.

No matter how much you spend on a new dishwasher, how many features it has, or how clever its designers claim to be, they all have the same fundamental problem. They bring in more water, but not enough to do the job.

That is why it is always so easy to build a better dishwasher. If you are willing to accept 1% more water and a slightly lower energy efficiency rating, there is no reason at all why it shouldn’t be better.

Some people have a relationship with a brand that is so powerful, it’s hard to separate the two. I am one of those people. My whole kitchen is full of GE appliances, from the stove and fridge to the dishwasher. And with good reason: They’re great.

It’s worth noting that I haven’t bought any GE products for at least a decade. The last thing I bought from them was a refrigerator, and that was in 2000. (I’ve had an old-line Kenmore since then.)

The first few times I had to replace an appliance, I took the cheapest new one available on-line, figuring they were all made by the same Chinese factories anyway. Then I started looking around, and found some incredible deals on used appliances, particularly dishwashers.

If you’re not sure what you want and can’t find it anywhere else at a reasonable price, then buying used is usually the way to go. You don’t know what you’re getting; all appliances fail eventually, and if it’s been in use for a while it might have some problems. But if you know exactly what you want–and are willing to spend enough time researching–you can find some amazing deals on used dishwashers.(And sometimes even on used
