A surprisingly large number of people have asked me, “what is a quiet dishwasher?”

Most dishwashers are not very loud. If you live in a house or apartment with an open floor plan, you probably hear your dishwasher while it’s running – but only if you’re close to the kitchen. Here’s what all of that noise is, and how it works.

The front end of the cycle, when the dishes are washed, is the most important one to the user. It’s also the loudest part of the cycle. The main thing that makes noise during this part of the cycle is water splashing around inside of your dishwasher as it travels from the bottom to the top of your machine and back again. This noise can be reduced by using a quieter type of pump, bigger pipes, and more insulation around them.

Dishwashers are one of the most common appliances in a kitchen. They can be found in about two-thirds of American households. But for all of their importance, there are very few people who really know what makes a dishwasher quiet, and how dishwashers got that way.

A good place to start is by looking at the different parts of a dishwasher that contribute to its noise level. These parts include the wash pump, spray arms, water inlet valve and drain pump. Each of these components plays an important role in the overall functioning of the appliance, but they also contribute to the sounds generated by your dishwasher. We’ll take a look at each component individually and examine what it does, where it is located and how it contributes to your dishwasher’s noise level.

In the early days of dishwashers, noise was not a big consideration. If a loud dishwasher did its job better, it was considered a good thing. But now different manufacturers advertise their machine’s quietness. So what is a quiet dishwasher?

What makes a dishwasher so noisy? It depends on the design of the appliance and the wash cycle program it’s running. Early machines used an exposed wash arm that sprayed water around. The arm had to spin fast to create enough spray force to clean well. This exposed arm also splashed on the tub walls and floor, creating more noise. Water hitting metal made a lot of noise, so manufacturers resorted to rubber or plastic parts in an effort to dampen sound.

Over time, these parts have been improved by changing their materials and shape to reduce noise. More recently, engineers have moved away from external wash arms altogether in favor of moving the water around inside sealed containers with internal wash impellers. A quieter wash system wasn’t enough though; they also had to eliminate other sources of noise within the machine itself.

How did we get so many choices on how our dishwashers should operate? We know it’s nice to have options, but you may wonder why there are all these cycles and settings on your dishwasher, and what exactly they do.

Today, most dishwashers have three key features: cycles, options, and wash levels. Cycles are simply different ways to clean dishes: normal wash for everyday loads, heavy wash for pots and pans, and so on. Options let you change things like the temperature of the water being used for cleaning or drying, or whether the machine will use heat or no heat for drying (if your model has an energy-saving option). And wash levels are essentially the intensity at which your dishes will be cleaned: from light to heavy.”

In the recent past, the quietest dishwasher you could buy was about 50 decibels. That’s about as loud as a normal conversation. But these days, you can spend more and get a much quieter appliance — one that’s as low as 38 decibels. To put that in perspective, 38 decibels is just a little louder than a whisper.

If your kitchen is open to your living or dining room, this can make a huge difference in how much you notice the dishwasher running.

What makes one dishwasher quieter than another? Here are some factors:

The type of motor it uses. Old-fashioned models had motors that were attached to pumps and spray arms. These days, most manufacturers use a single motor up on top of the machine that turns both the pump and the spray arms via belts. There’s nothing wrong with the old style, but it does tend to be noisier.

How stiff its case is. A sturdy case will dampen sound better than one made of thinner metal or plastic. And even if manufacturers use similar metals, some will be thicker than others (which also adds weight).
