We’ve been testing dishwashers for more than 15 years. In that time we’ve evaluated more than 200 models, putting each through a battery of cleaning, drying and convenience tests. After our most recent tests, three new dishwashers rose to the top of the pack.
The Kenmore 13733 (MSRP $800) is our new favorite dishwasher. For the price it cleans better than anything else we’ve tested, and it’s available at Sears stores nationwide—a rarity in this age of limited distribution. You can also find it in our Ratings, where you’ll notice it’s earned the highest score of any dishwasher we’ve tested to date.
In second place is the Kenmore Elite 12783 (MSRP $1,300). Like many high-end dishwashers from big brands like KitchenAid and Bosch, this machine has a third rack for silverware—a feature quickly becoming standard with upscale brands. The 12783 is also Wi-Fi enabled; its app lets you start or stop a cycle via your smartphone.
The GE GDF610PMJES is one of the best dishwashers we’ve tested. It’s a solid, no-frills machine that can clean your dishes just as well as some high-end models, but it costs only $700. The GE’s drying system was more effective than those of other dishwashers in its price range, and it cleans and rinses dishes without leaving a lot of food particles behind. Its hard food disposer is effective at breaking down food stuck to plates, which means you won’t have to prewash your dishes before loading them in the dishwasher. The GE is also Energy Star certified.
The Bosch SHX878WD5N is a great dishwasher, but it wasn’t able to outperform the GE in our tests. Although this Bosch model has a third rack for utensils, it didn’t clean or dry as well as the GE model. This Bosch model also costs more — $900 versus $700 for the GE.
The KitchenAid KDPE234GPS is a very expensive dishwasher that failed to impress us with either its cleaning or drying performance. The upper rack doesn’t have a height adjustable feature and we found that the silverware basket was too small
A dishwasher is a mechanical device for cleaning dishware and cutlery. Unlike manual dishwashing, which relies largely on physical scrubbing to remove soiling, the mechanical dishwasher cleans by spraying hot water, typically between 45 and 75 °C (110 and 170 °F), at the dishes, with lower temperatures used for delicate items. A mix of water and dishwasher detergent is pumped to one or more rotating spray arms, blasting the dishes with the cleaning mixture. Once the wash is finished, the water is drained, more hot water enters the tub by means of an electric heating element or gas burner and a rinse aid is forced into the rinse water by means of a venturi pump that creates a siphon jet. The fresh water rinses any residual detergent or impurities from the washed items.
