As you may already know, replacing your old dishwasher with a new and energy efficient model can save you money on your utility bills. But how much exactly? We’ll help you figure out exactly how much money you can save by getting a new energy efficient dishwasher.
First, let’s take a look at what kind of savings you can expect on your water bill with a new machine. You can expect to use somewhere between 5 and 10 gallons less per load than you would with an older model machine. If you run only one load per day and are currently using the average amount of water (7.5 gallons), then this will save you around 2,750 gallons of water a year!
Next, let’s take a look at your electricity usage. With newer machines, especially those rated Energy Star, you can expect to cut your energy usage in half! So if we use the above example again, running one load per day with an average amount of electricity used (1 kWh = 1 kilowatt hour), then you will use around 365 kWh of electricity less per year!
Finally, let’s look at both together. Using our example from above, if typical residential water costs $1.50 per 1000 gallons and electric costs $0.10/kWh

How much can you save?
Well, it depends on two major factors: How much you use your dishwasher and how much your electricity costs.
But for a typical family of four running about two loads per day, you can save $250 annually by switching from an older model to an energy star certified dishwasher.
The actual savings will depend on your utility provider and the amount of electricity you use. But in general, you will see a significant reduction in your energy bill and have an appliance that works better and uses less water than the older models.
The average cost of operating a dishwasher is approximately $.67 per load. This can be significantly reduced with a new energy efficient dishwasher. Many of the new energy efficient models use less than half the water and energy used by older dishwashers, which means they can save you hundreds of dollars in utility costs over their lifetime.
In addition to saving money on your utility bills, you can also save money by getting rid of your old model. New Energy Star rated dishwashers are eligible for a rebate through June 30, 2009. If you purchase an Energy Star model, you may receive a $150 rebate from Xcel Energy or a $75 rebate from Centerpoint Energy/Minnesota Energy Resources Corporation. To qualify for the rebate, the new dishwasher must replace an existing model that was manufactured before 1994, and you must remove and recycle the old unit at the time of installation.
